GTRCMC Business Overview

Conceptualizing “tourism resilience”

Inspite of its enormous economic impact, the tourism value chain is vulnerable to disruption linked to phenomena such as natural disasters, climate change, pandemics, geopolitical conflicts, and other crises. Enhancing Tourism resilience is therefore crucial to ensuring a sustainable, economically-viable and competitive tourism product. Tourism resilience can be defined as the ability of tourism destinations, businesses, and communities to adapt and
recover from disruptive events. The process of resilience-building involves anticipating disruptions, taking steps to prevent them or mitigating their impact when they occur. Resilient destinations are better able to respond to and recover from crises quickly, minimizing long-term negative impacts. They are better able to quickly restore their infrastructure, re-establish traveler confidence, and resume tourism activities, ensuring that tourism revenues continue to flow into the local economy. Resilient tourism businesses are adaptive and respond well to changing demands, expectations and market conditions which enables them to maintain agility and competitive edge. Resilient tourism- dependent communities can also support each other in times of crisis, ensuring that local communities are not left behind and can benefit from tourism in the long term.

The failure of tourism stakeholders to prioritize resilience-building efforts will ultimately undermine the long -term economic, social and environmental benefits and contributions of the global tourism industry. This will especially hurt tourism-dependent economies of the Global South. Against the backdrop that enhancing tourism resilience will play a critical role in ensuring the sustainability of global tourism, the objective of this document is to identify the key elements of constructing effective tourism resilience architectures. It places special focus on the role of innovations, technologies, research and development and coordinated efforts in enhancing tourism resilience, adaptation and responsiveness as well as promoting sustainable tourism development.

Innovation and Technological Resilience Solutions for Tourism Sustainability

Innovation and technology are catalysts of tourism resilience, adaptability and sustainability. Cutting edge modern innovations and technologies offer a wide range of potential tools and solutions for improving energy and resource conservation and waste management, enabling risk-mapping, enhancing data-gathering, sharing and analysis (big data technologies), simplifying commercial transactions and service delivery (e.g. e-ecommerce), promoting
customization and responsiveness (e.g. automation), improving marketing and connectivity, diversifying options for experiential tourism (e.g. virtual tourism) and overall ensuring more seamless experiences through the travel and tourism value chain.

Many businesses, governments and civil society organizations, in particular, play a critical role in building tourism resilience and sustainability by providing a range of services and support to entrepreneurs and startups, including mentorship, coaching, networking opportunities, access to funding, and business development support. Some of these activities have included::

  • help entrepreneurs to develop innovative and technological solutions that promote sustainable tourism practices and build tourism resilience
  • help tourism businesses and destinations to adapt to changing market conditions by providing access to the latest technologies and market insights.
  • help businesses to identify new opportunities and develop innovative business models that promote sustainability and resilience.
  • foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among tourism stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and tourism businesses.
  • help to build partnerships and networks that promote tourism resilience and sustainability by bringing together diverse stakeholder.

There is indeed a need for a centralized space to that provides Micro-Small and Medium-Sized Tourism entrepreneurs, particular startups to build their resilience and support their ability to scale, transform and further support global tourism sustainability. The Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC) headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica and with offices around the world, has the capacity, network and resources to provide such a space.
